BIBLE READING (convention)
(For Grades 3-6)
Note: This Event is only intended for participants in, Grades 3-6. For Bible Reading Rules, Grades 7-12,
please refer to Pre-Convention section of this Manual
PURPOSE: This event provides an opportunity for young people, Grades 3-6, to motivate one
another and develop skills through the oral reading of the Scripture.
PROCESS:
Each congregation will:
1. Have each participant choose a reading from the Old or New Testament.
2. Choose a reading from a Standard translation, no paraphrases.
3. Properly register each participant.
4. Provide one judge, if possible to be used as needed, for male participants, and for
female participants.
The Event Director will:
1. Oversee judging and rooms.
2. Review judging forms and hand judging sheets and recommended awards to
Convention Events Coordinator.
3. Provide critique sheets to all participants.
RULES:
1. A brief introduction is required. The entire presentation, including the brief introduction
and scripture reading, is not to be less than one minute or more than two minutes in
length. Students will be penalized five points for any time under one minute or over two
minutes. Therefore, aim for 1 1/2 minutes.
2. There will be three Judges and a Timekeeper. An award rating will be assigned based
on the point average between the three Judges.
3. Spectators may not leave or enter the room while participants are speaking.
4. Video or audio equipment must be set up prior to the event and must be stationary. No
participant may be taped without his / her advance approval and appropriate notification
to the Judges.
5. The participant should not attempt to explain or interpret the passages. A brief
introduction is required. However, participants should place major emphasis on the
actual Bible reading and not on prepared statements. The identification of the passage,
the translation, and the setting of the passage together should not exceed 20 seconds.
6. Participants will be penalized if the identification and introduction exceeds 20 seconds.
Participants will also be penalized if they omit identification of the passage and
translation. Memorization is neither required nor encouraged. The ability to read the
passage is what is being judged.
7. There will be no podiums available for this event.
AWARDS:
1. Participants will be judged as individuals and not on a grade-level basis.
2. One of the following award ratings will be assigned to each participant based upon the
point average between the three Judges’ sheets.
Gold = 95-100 points; Silver = 85-94 points; Bronze = 70-84 points; No Award = 0-69 points
3. Each participant will receive an appropriately colored engraved plate for the individual’s
award plaque. ADDITIONALLY, a team plate will be awarded to each team in each
